Relieving Letter

A formal document confirming an employee has completed their exit obligations and is officially released from the company.

A Relieving Letter is the formal document an employer issues confirming that an employee has completed all exit obligations — notice period served or bought out, assets returned, handover complete — and is officially released from employment.

It's one of the most commonly requested documents by an employee's next employer during background verification, which makes delays in issuing it a frequent source of friction between a departing employee and their former HR team.
